Experience Mexican Independence Day in Mérida, a two-day celebration filled with music, food, tradition, and national pride. The festivities begin on the evening of September 15 with El Grito de Independencia, the ceremonial “cry of independence” that commemorates the beginning of Mexico’s struggle for independence from Spain.
In Mérida, crowds gather in Plaza Grande for El Grito, joining the traditional cries of ¡Viva México! and ¡Viva la Independencia! before the celebrations continue with concerts and fireworks. The following day, September 16, is a national holiday marked by parades and celebrations throughout the city. The main civic parade takes place along Paseo de Montejo, beginning at 8 AM.
