Late October and early November bring a very meaningful time of year to Mérida. Festival de las Ánimas fills the city with music, dance, altars, seasonal foods, ceremonies, parades, and community celebrations. This is a unique celebration found only in Yucatán and not to be confused with Día de los Muertos.
At the heart of the season is Janal Pixán, the Maya tradition of honoring loved ones who have passed. Meaning “food for the souls,” Janal Pixán is deeply connected to family, remembrance, traditional foods, and the creation of altars to welcome the deceased back to the living for a grand celebration. This year, we will also be creating our first Janal Pixán altar at Los Colores, with guests invited to contribute.
