Maratón de Baile
On the last Sunday of each month, Plaza Grande comes alive with music, dancing, and hundreds of Méridanos gathering for Maratón de Baile. From 6:00 PM, local musical groups fill the plaza with the tropical sounds that have been part of Mexican popular culture for generations. It's lively, spontaneous, and wonderfully local.
Outside the municipal building, local musical groups perform emblematic melodies and rhythms that have been popular in Mexico since the 1950s, including bolero, danzón, rumba, mambo, chachachá, and cumbia. The music continues until around 8:00 PM, but the real attraction is the crowd. Hundreds of people regularly gather in the plaza, singing along, dancing, and enjoying the evening together.
This is very much a local Mérida experience, and it's an easy evening out for guests of Los Colores de Merida B&B. Don't be surprised if someone invites you to dance. You don't need to know…
